Physiotherapy and Urogynaecology

In 2016, Shelley Solomon was invited by Dr Mairi Wallace to assist in the Cook Islands and has been a part  of the Urogynae HSV since 2017.  Both Mairi and Shelley recognise the importance of a combined approach to managing many gynaecological and urological issues.  Surgical patients are seen in clinic and post-operatively by Shelley. The focus here is on restoring normal bladder and bowel function, pelvic floor muscle rehabilitation, and providing guidance for safe return to activity and function post-operatively, all aimed at fully optimising the outcome of surgery.

Pelvic health physiotherapy (also known as women’s health physiotherapy or pelvic floor physiotherapy) is a specialised area of physiotherapy focused on the assessment and treatment of conditions related to the pelvic floor muscles, pelvic organs, and surrounding structures in both women and men. Pelvic health physiotherapy can help with a wide range of issues including incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, pelvic pain, recovery after childbirth, bladder and bowel issues, sexual dysfunction, and preparation for or recovery from pelvic surgery. It also plays a key role in education and rehabilitation following pelvic injuries and trauma.

In addition to inpatient care, Shelley also manages a daily outpatient caseload.  This consists of patients with pelvic health issues that do not require surgery or for whom conservative management is the preferred first step.
